Classification Badges you will see and a bit about what they all mean

There are many different badges of different types you will see on every ATC Squadron. Here, we aim to cover the main ones that might confuse a new cadet or probationer. If it's your first night, don't worry what all the badges mean - just be polite. Nobody expects you to pick it all up instantly!

Firstly, we will look at Classification Badges on the brassard, which is worn on the right arm. These badges show how many of the academic subjects a cadet has achieved. Click here for a list of the subject you can take.

1st Class Cadet Taken when you join the squadron. It gives you all the knowledge you need about the ATC, safety around aircraft and some navigation training
Leading Cadet Usually taken after about one year of service. It builds on your First Class knowledge and starts to teach you a little about how aircraft fly and RAF stations operate
Senior Cadet Taken after 18 months to two years service. You can choose your subject to specialise in an area of interest. Subjects available such as Propulsion or Radio and Radar
Staff Cadet Lanyard (worn on left shoulder) By now you will be teaching cadets as well as learning. Another two subject to choose and a lecture to prepare and present to a Wing Staff Officer will earn you the lanyard.
